 Основанная в 1916 году Густавом Отто и Карлом Раппом компания Bayerische Flugzeugwerke на сегодняшний день является гигантом рынка автомобилей. Кто не слышал о легендарном заводе BMW и не знает, что здесь производится? А ведь как следует из названия — Баварские авиационные заводы – первоначально компания специализировалась на разработке продукции для военно-воздушных сил. 
Разработки BMW в области двигателей позволили достичь небывалых высот летчикам. Так, 1919 год ознаменован новым мировым рекордом — Франц Зено Димер достиг высоты в 9760 метров. Само собой, его самолет был оснащен двигателем BMW. Чуть позже, в 1924 году самолет с двигателем БМВ стал транспортом для первого межконтинентального перелета в Персию. 
В довоенный период основным направлением деятельности компании БМВ было производство авиационных двигателей. Одним из самых значительных достижений компании БМВ этого периода стал выпуск рядной «шестерки», мотора, который послужил стимулом для перехода от авиа к автомобильным разработкам.
